Toyota Repair: P0420/P0773, oxygen sensors, electrical malfunction

Question
Sir-
We have a 2001 Toyota Sienna XLE van with around 94,000 miles.  We had a check enigine light come on with a code of P0420.  After several trips into Midas we ended up having two oxygen sensors and the converter replaced.  On the last trip into Midas they also said a P0773 code came up which said a "transmission solenoid" needed to be replaced. Midas would do it at a cost of $1,600.00.  The van runs perfectly fine.  In fact it runs just as good as the day we bought it brand new.  If shifts fine and the RPM's are nomal.  My question to you is would there be any connection between the two codes coming up at the same time?  My wife thinks Midas is pulling a fast one on us as we have heard of several other people in town that have had problems with them.  I just hate to spend $1,600.00 on the van after spending almost $1,000.00.  A freind of mine told me to clear the light (disconnect battery cable) and see if the light comes back.  I am kind of afraid to do that because I don't want to do any further damage to the vehicle.
Thanks for your help,
Ron

Answer
Probably only needed the Cat and not the sensors.
p0420 is a Cat efficiency code. To get that code, the sensors had to be working.

For the p0773-
There is a service bulletin out for that code.
You need an enging/trans computer.
Its covered to 80,000 miles.
Since your close. Id call the 800 number in the owners manual and "cry". you may get it for free, or only pay labor.

Bulletin # EG016-01

Under certain driving conditions, some 2001 model year Avalon and Sienna vehicles may
exhibit M.I.L. “ON” with DTC P0773 (Shift Solenoid E Electrical Malfunction). The Engine
Control Module (ECM) was revised to correct this condition.
