Toyota Repair: 4 runner runs only when it wants to, fuel compression, ground fuel

Question
I have a 87 4 runner with 22-re engine.  When it runs, it runs very well but it does not always start.  Has been doing this for about a year and is now getting worse.  I will turn over fine but no fire.  Come back in an hour and it will start right up.  Runs fine all day.  Turn it off and come back tomorrow and it may or may not run.  Wait an hour, maybe it starts.  Wait a few days, maybe it starts. Then it will go a few days with no issues.  Starts when and if it wants.  Does not seem to be temperature related.

Check distributor, all ok.  New plug wires, new coil, new dist. cap, new rotor, etc.  Cleaned and checked igniter ground.  Changed igniter with other one. Don't know if either is good or bad.  Problem seems less with one igniter then the other but still similar issue with both igniters - both are used.  Checked engine to firewall ground.  Fuel flow is good.  New fuel filter.  Always runs when I bring it to shop.

Heard something about checking the ground from injector to plenum.  Don't know what to look for on that or where to look.

Any help would be appriciated.

Answer
What you're talking about is just another engine gruonding point. You can replace that wire, or add another one attached to the chassie, and the engine. Make sure there is contract (bare metal).

I would replace the EFI main relay, and check / replace the igniter.
If that doesn't work. Spark + fuel + compression & all at the right time. Start by making sure there is spark in that condition, that there is fuel firing from the injectors & that the ignition & cam timing is correct.
