Toyota Repair: 98 Avalon trunk lever broken, release cable, release lever

The trunk lever on our 98 Avalon - below the left side of the driver's seat doesn't release the trunk latch any more.  Where do I start the repair?  Luckily the key still works in the trunk's keyhole.  Thanks in advance for your expertise.

Since the lock still works with the key the trunk lock can be eliminated as the problem which leaves the inside release handle and the cable as the possible problem.
Remove the trunk latch and see if the release cable is broken or has become disconnected at the release lever.
