Toyota Repair: 2000 Toyota 4Runner stalling, mass air sensor, toyota 4runner

Question
Just wondering if anyone could help with a problem recently with my 2000 4runner.

About a month ago I put in a K&N rechargable air filter.  This week I was driving, came to a stop, started off and it died on me.  It acted like it was a fuel problem where it seemed to run out of gas.

I had it towed to my mechanic.  They started it the next day and it died after about 30 seconds.  They started it again and it ran without a problem.  They hooked up a computer and could not pull any codes.  They replaced the fuel filter and said to take it and if there were any other problems they would come up and test the fuel pressure to make sure the fuel pump does not have a problem.

My wife drove it for a day and a half with no problems but then she came to a stop, took off and it acted like it was flat and hesitant suggesting that there might be another problem again.  There were no check engine lights on at any time during both of these problems.

I called my mechanic and he thinks it might be a mass air sensor problem.  I told him about the K&N filter and he told me to throw it away because it may be depositing excess oil on the MAS.

Would appreciate any help on this.

Thanks for your time!
Tom

Answer
Anything that comes in contact with the MAF sensor can contaminate it.
If you can read the scan tool data and the fuel trim #s are high, over ten, then your on the right track.
Ive seen guys stretch a pair of pantyhose, yes pantyhose,
over the intake tube, duct tape it around, trim and then reinstall the airpipe.I wouldnt want to suck it in the motor though!
Seems to act as an air purifier.
