Toyota Repair: Rack and Pinion 97 Camry, power steering rack, power steering pump

I was told that I need to replace the rack and pinion on my 97 Toyota Camry w/ about 108K miles. I have heard a grinding noise upon applying the brakes and some power stearing fluid loss but that's all. What are the symptoms of this going out? And, how much is reasonable to pay to have it done?

I would have another shop or another toyota dealer check it to get another opinion, a lot of times the power steering pump is leaking on to the power steering rack boot and it will look like the rack is leaking. The brake grinding noise is not related and it sounds like some brake repairs may be needed.
