Toyota Repair: Trouble codes, modulator valve, exhaust gas recirculation

Question
Thank for your time.
I have a 1994 Toyota 4 runner v6 with 136000 miles. The self diagnostic system gives me a code of 17. If I unhook the battery cable the check engine light will not return for a couple days. I cannot find this number listed in the trouble guides I have looked at. I do not have any noticable engine problems other than the light. Can you help me?

Answer
There is no trouble code with the #17 but there is a 71 code, it may be that the code is being read backwards, anyway the code 71 refers to a malfunction with the exhaust gas recirculation(EGR) system, the most common cause is that the egr modulator valve is leaking, it's located on a bracket on the egr valve, replace it and clear the code, this should take care of the problem.
