Toyota Repair: EVAP Emission Control Circut Malfunction, hydrocarbon emissions, vacuum hoses

Question
I have a 2001 Toyota Tacoma with Manual transmission
a 2.4 L engine(4 cylinder)w/2 wheel drive and 57K miles. My question is where or what is the EVAP Emission Control Circut because my check engine light went on and I immediately went to auto zone and plugged it into the diagnostic machine and came up with the code P0446 and the phrase "EVAP Emission Control Circut Malfunction". I don't have the toyota manual for my truck because I brought it private party so I don't even know where to begin. I'm a starving student so to speak and can't afford to spend a lot of money on repairs, so If I could fix this myself by replacing a circut or something that would save my life. Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Answer
The PO446 code indicates that there is a leak in the closed system that controls hydrocarbon emissions from the fuel system, this does not affect driveability and there is no fuel leak rather they may be fuel vapors entering the atmosphere from the the fuel system instead of directing these vapors back through a somewhat complicated evap control system into the intake system or back into the fuel tank, I suggest that you make sure that the gas cap is on tight and is in good condition, check the sealing ring and where it contacts the fuel filler neck, about 80% of the 446 codes are triggered by either a missing or loose gas cap.
Tighten or replace the gas cap and then remove the negative battery terminal and wait ten seconds then reconnect it, this will clear the diagnostic code, also check under the hood for any large vacuum hoses that may have become disconnected from the air filter housing.
If the light comes back on you may have to take it to the toyota dealer and just pay the diagnostic fee and they will make a recommendation as to what course of action to take.
