Toyota Repair: Ignition, toyota camry, toyota models

Question
1996 Toyota Camry.  The car has been driving fine.  Went to start the car, put the key in the ignition and the key would not turn, I then turned the steering wheel a little and got the key to turn to the ACC position but no farther.  This happens when the car is in Park and also Neutral.  Any suggestions before paying for a tow to the Toyota dealership?  Thanks for your assistance

Answer
This is getting to be a common occurence on some of the older toyota models, they ignition lock cylinders and keys start to wear and the locks won't release anymore and can't be turned, the first thing I would try is to have a new key made, I have seen many keys that just wear down and cause this problem, the toyota dealer's parts department can make a new key for you using the VIN#. This is especially true if the key also has difficulty in unlocking the doors.
If the key can lock and unlock all the doors then it's probably not the problem and the ignition lock cylinder will need to be replaced, sometimes persistent wiggling of the key will finally work to at least get it started saving you a tow bill.
