Toyota Repair: automatic shifter/ ignition key wont come out, brake light switch, shift lock

Question
hello. i have a 1998 toyota tacoma tr5 package. just the other day i noticed that the button was sticking to put it into drive. i pushed down on it real hard and it made a clicking noise. i can shift it back and forth but it wont let me turn the key all the way to take it out. any solution.

Answer
It's a shift interlock problem, check the brake lights to make sure they turn on when the brake pedal is depressed, if not replace the brake light switch.
If that's not the case the shifter console needs to be removed to inspect the shift lock solenoid, these can stick due to soft drinks having been spilled on the shift console, if that's the case the moving parts can be cleaned with soap and water.
