Toyota Repair: 1996 Toyota Camry Antenna Problem, haynes repair manual, antenna mast

Question
My Toyota Camry Antenna constantly stays up. It does not go up or down. I bought the Haynes repair manual for this series but it does not address this specific problem. Does the whole assembly need replacing? If so, how difficult is it? Any assistance is greatly appreciated

Answer
If you can hear the motor running and making a growling noise when the radio is turned on the antenna mast only needs to be replaced, if there is no noise at all the entire assembly is the problem.
In most cases the mast is the problem, part of it is broken off and stuck in the motor, this means the antenna has to be removed and disassembled to get the broken piece out, replacing the entire antenna assembly is easy, getting the broken piece out is not and involves more work, the difference in cost between replacing the entire antenna yourself or having someone take it apart and charge you labor is small, unless you want to try to take it apart yourself, this is the least expensive way.
