Toyota Repair: 1992 toyota paseo transmission, 1992 toyota paseo, toyota paseo

Question
hi ted,

i was driving my paseo into work on saturday morning when, for no reason, the car slipped out of gear as if i was in neutral.  i was in 4th gear at the time.  i pulled over to the side of the road, and just before i came to a complete stop, i put the car in 1st and it caught and  ran fine.  about 7 or 8 miles later, while in 5th gear, the same thing happened.  i parked the car, went to work, then that evening, started the car and it ran fine for about 10 miles.  next thing i knew, the same problem.  the car slipped out of gear and wouldn't move.  now, when i start the
car and put it into gear, it goes into gear but as i release the clutch the car won't move and there is a grinding sound.  any ideas?  and how difficult is it to replace the transmission? thanks, rob

Answer
Yes it does sound like the transmission has given out and needs to be replaced, replacing it is a lot of work and will take most of the day to do even with a lift and transmission jacks, it's not something I would recommend doing yourself unless you have all the necessary tools and really know what you are doing.
