My daughter has a 1994 Toyota Paseo that has been runnung just fine, the problem we are having is this. When you turn the key -nothing- no sound and no lights on the radio. The headlights/interior lights work.Also...the break is stiff and you can not put the car in gear, as if it is locked ? We replaced the battery, but that didnt work. We are clueless as to what to do and I can't seem to find a repair manual to figure this out. Any and all help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated !!

I need to know a couple of things before I can answer.
Is the gear shifter in park position and you are not able to get it out of park?
Is this an automatic transmission?
Is the shifter in another position other than park.
It sounds like there is a problem with the shift interlock system, the engine should start if in neutral or park position.

Here are the answers to your questions:
>>Yes... the gear shifter is in the park position, the only way to get it out of park ( at this time ) is to push on the safty switch button that is right next to the gear shifter.

>>This is an automatic transmission

>>When we do push on the safety switch button to shift it into another gear- it still will not make a sound when you turn the key ?

Thanks for your replys, I really appreciate it very much !!

One more question for you and it is very important, has anyone tried to jump start the battery recently?
If for any reason the jumper battery was connected backwards it can cause this problem. It can also be caused by connecting the new battery incorrectly even if only for an instant.
Let me know if this may or may not have happened.

>> Answer..
When the car would not start we went and got a new battery, the car still would not start- so we tried to jump it.( once when we got the battery and then a few hours later )that still did not work.Basically...like I said earlier, when you turn the key their is no sound- but lights work. Some people have suggested the solenoid- what do you think ?

Answer
Check the fuses under the hood under the black cover, there should be an 80 or 100 amp alternator fuse, check to see if it has blown, if so check all of the other fuses, if the alternator fuse has blown there will be no response from the starting system.
