Toyota Repair: 4runner back hatch, release lever, 4runner

How do you fix a back hatch that wont lift up, i cant even figure out how to get to the mechanics behind the panel. its a 1998 4 runner

Answer
This can be a little difficult, the rear door panel has to be removed and then the metal panel underneath, then access to the lock is possible, the door can be opened by moving the release lever on the lock itself, the problem may be that the control rod has come off the lock and reattaching it may solve the problem.
