Toyota Repair: Carb Problems 1987 Toyota Corolla LE, toyota corolla, vacuum hose

Question
Hi Ted,
I own a 1987 Toyota Corolla LE, 4 cyl.,1.8 L carbureted 2- barrel. Milage: 187,991
I've had to remove the catalytic converter because it was plugged and was glowing red.
Raw fuel seemed to be dumped into the converter.
It seems to "flood out" at times and other times I have to pour a little gas down the carb so it will start.
So far I have replaced the fuel and air filters which really needed it.

Is there something I can replace on the carb that will help fix this problem or does the carb itself need to be rebuilt/changed?

Thank you for any suggestions.

Answer
There are not too many mechanics anymore who even know what a carburetor is much less how to fix one.
This carburetor had an auxillary accelerator pump, it's located on the side of the carburetor and has a vacuum hose going to it, pull the hose off and look for any signs of raw fuel that will come out of the pipe.
If there is replace the diaphragm for the AAP, you may have trouble getting the parts department to find it but give it a try, only the toyota dealer will have this part.
If this diaphragm ruptures it will draw raw fuel into the intake manifold causing a rough idle and rich condition.
Other than that, try finding an autoparts place or specialist that can sell you a rebuilt carburetor.
