i have 86 4runner with a 22re 4cyl, 5 speed,4x4.when you go to start it it turns over and starts and then runs for about 5 seconds and dies out.its been sitting for about a month and always smoked til it warmed up.but it ran good.thanks for any help.
Answer -
There may be an air leak somewhere between the air filter and where it connects to the throttle body. Check for any cracks or looseness of the intake hoses.
After it stops running does it start backup again and does the same thing or do you have to wait a certain time for it to start again?
it starts right back up and runs about 5 seconds and dies out.

Answer
The most common cause for this is that there is an intake leak, maybe a hose off somewhere on the intake system.
The other thing I can think of is that there may be a loss of fuel pressure, attach a fuel pressure gauge and see if the fuel pressure drops when it stalls.
Another possible cause may be the air flow meter, remove it and make sure the air door can be moved all the way open and try another air flow meter if necessary, one more thing but this is kind of unusual but I have seen it happen, if everything checks out good, the exhaust system may be restricted by a clogged catalityc converter, like I say, it's rare but one of those things to consider if everything else fails.
