Toyota Repair: 97 4wd 2.7L Auto Reg Cab Tacoma, cylinder compression, 4wd auto

Question
Hi Ted,

I Have a 97 Tacoma 4wd Auto 2.7L. 102,000. From reading lots of your other posts, it appears that my problem is not that uncommon.
After the engine has warmed up and at a complete stop for more than 3 or so seconds the engine begins to run very rough. It will smooth out a little if I put the truck either in Park or Neutral. It runs fine throughout the other gears.
I just had all the belts, fuel filter, air filter, plugs and wires (oem toyota), oil change and the tires rotated. The problem was pre-existing this "tune-up".
The mechanic that did the work said that he had found some recall that requires Toyota to "Reflash the memory"? I called a local dealer and they could find no such thing. Also, by just doing a generic search on the internet I could not find any recalls on my 97 Taco. I have called the original mechanic back and he is searching again.
Assuming there is no recall on my Taco what should I be prepared to do. Thanks in Advance.

Answer
There is no recall like that, this engine is prone to leaking valves and at this mileage I suspect that this is the case, have a cylinder compression test done, tell the mechanic to do that and see what the readings are, there should be at least 150 PSI on each cylinder +or-10PSI variation.
