Toyota Repair: check engine light (code P0171 & P0441) on 2000 Toyota Celica GT 85K miles, mass air flow sensor, toyota celica gt

Question
check engine light is on and according to Autozone is throwing codes P0171 - "system too lean bank 1" and P0441 - Evaporative emission control system Incorrect purge flow.

The car is also burning a little oil and is exhibiting one additional strange behavior...
It wants to stall out but only right after filling the car with gas.

The car was also recently in a traffic accident where some body work (new hood) and needed a new radiator and A/C.

Any idea where to start?  For P0441 maybe carbon/charcoal canister, gas cap?  For P0171 could there be carbon build up around EGR valve or in intake manifold?

I also wanted to know what engine is in the 2000 Celica GT? Is this one of the engines with the sludge or gelling problem that resulted in Toyota providing a 8 years unlimited mileage warranty extension?

Thanks,

Lee

Answer
This model celica can have either the 1ZZ-FE or the 2ZZ-FE, the underhood label should tell you, neither one of these engines was subject to the gelling problem.
The PO171 code is caused by a malfunctioning mass air flow sensor(MAF) and I recommend replacing it to repair that problem.
The PO441 can be caused by a lot of things and is usually related to a small leak in the emission control evap system, try replacing the gas cap and see if it helps, if not, the system needs to be tested for a leak with the scantool or a leak tester or both.
