Toyota Repair: Toyota 1994 pickup SR5 4x4, radiator fluid, head gasket

Question
I have a 94 Yota SR5 4x4 auto trans with almost 140,000 miles on it.  For about 2 months I have had rough idling and poor response when the engine was cold when starting in the morning.  When the engine got warm it ran fine. A few days ago after a long trip (2hrs  hwy driving) the engine began to smoke and white smoke and a burning smell came from the exhaust.  One day later I ran the truck and had the same issue, but the burning smell got worse and white smoke engulfed the sky as I drove down the street.  I took it in to get looked at and the repair man said he found radiator fluid in cylinder #1 and all others were good.  As for the compression he noted that the bad cylinder had a compression of 130 while all else were at 190.  His assumption was that the truck needs a new head gasket.  I understand that this is a costly fix.  So my two questions to you are: What if anything else should I look for in this problem other than a bad head gasket? Also, do you even think this job is worth it or should I look to scrap/sell the truck and look for something else? Aside from this problem the truck is amazing and has ho major defects or body damage.  With this many miles and the low MSRP I am not sure this is even worth the repair. Please Advise?  -Nate

Answer
These engines are notorious for headgasket failures, as a matter of fact there is a special service campaign that is still in effect for vehicles with this v-6 engine for model years 1989-1995, Toyota will do a one time headgasket replacement at no charge so if it was never done on this truck it could still apply as long as it has never been done.
You can call the toyota dealer and have them check the VIN# to see if it is available still or you can give the number to me and I'll check for you.
Remember though that they only pay for the headgasket replacement and nothing else so if additional problems are found it will be at your expense.
In case that the headgaskets were already replaced under the SSC it may end up costing you around $2,000 the cylinder heads normally need machine work at this mileage.
