82' 3/4 Ton 4cyl Pickup 141,000 miles. I just bought this pickup 2 days ago. The truck runs great it just won't idle. It's really hard to start, and then it won't idle without a foot on the gas. Sometimes when it's warmed up it will idle at a race, about 2000-2500rpm. I have replaced the spark plugs and the pcv valve. I noticed that it has the original spark plug wires, distributor cap and rotor.
Also, Can you tell me how to check the vaccum lines and diaphrams too?

Since this could be an EFI or carbureted engine, I need to know which it is.

I'm sorry, It's a carborated 2wd. I believe it is a 2.4L 4 cyl, the vin says 82' but the title says 83, and when I purchased insurance for it after telling them the vin# they told me it is an 83. I also have an update to my question since I have been driving it every day. It now starts fine, and will idle until it warms enough I believe to turn the choke off. Then it won't idle at all until it gets up to running temp, at which point it idles at a race 2000-2500 rpm. If I let it sit and idle for 10 min or so it will die.
Thanks in advance
Tyler

Answer
I sounds like the choke may be sticking, check to make sure the choke plate can move freely when the throttle is all the way open, it should move open and then spring back with the engine cold but not when the engine is hot, it should be fully open, if that's not the problem there may be an intake manifold leak at the gasket between the head and the manifold this used to be a common problem, another area to check is the carburetor base gasket for any leaks.
Another common problem used to be that the auxillary accelerator pump diaphragm on the carburetor ruptured allowing too much fuel into the engine, it's located on the side of the carburetor and is attached with three small screws and has a small vacuum line attached to it. Hope this helps you figure out the problem, if all else fails replace the carburetor with a rebuilt unit.
