Toyota Repair: CAR STOPPED WORKING, steam car, toyota camry

Question
Hi There,

1984 Toyota Camry SE
Here is the problem and what happened:
Driving down freeway(had just got gas maybe 15 min. before)when the car just SILENTLY quit.

NO LOUD NOISE LIKE A BELT BREAKING
There was NO SMOKE OR STEAM
CAR WAS NOT HOT
NO SPUTTERING OR COUGHING
After guiding to a stop I waited for about 10 min.
and tried to start it. It just turned over
but would not start.

A friend thought it was the timing belt. He put
a new belt on but that didn't work.
He said that the valves could be bent.
I hope someone out there can help me as I am a
widow and on a fixed income.
I would sort of like to know what I am up against
when I do take it in.

Thanks in advance
Car lady

Answer
The only thing I can tell you for sure is that the valves are not bent, it is impossible for this engine to bend valves even if the timing belt breaks, there are two areas that need to be checked, the engine either lost fuel pressure and is not getting any fuel or there is a loss of current to the spark plugs, have someone check for those two possibilities and eliminate one or the other and go from there, let me know what they find and any recommendations that the repair shop makes.
