Toyota Repair: 97 Land Cruiser P0401, california smog inspection, modulator valve

Question
I have a '97 Land Cruiser (40th Anniv.) with 146,000 miles that I stored for about two years.  I took it out of storage two weeks ago and did the basics (oil change, new battery).  It passed the California smog inspection.  A few days ago the Check Engine light came on.  The diagnostic I ran at Auto Zone indicated the P0401 code which relates to the EGR system.  Any tips on how I should proceed prior to paying a mechanic?  Is it possible that there is just build-up that I can clean out easily?  Also, any other steps I should take since I had the vehicle stored for so long.  Thank you for your assistance.

Answer
The EGR systems on these landcruisers can be a little tricky to figure out sometimes, there are basic functions that need to be checked with a vacuum gauge to pinpoint the problem, but there is hope, the most common failure is the egr modulator valve mounted on the egr valve, remove it and see if air can be blown through from the bottom port, if you can blow air through, replace the valve and see what happens, clear the code by disconnecting the battery, if the engine light comes back with the same code I would suggest having the toyota dealer check it, I have seen cases where the small steel vacuum lines get restricted with rust and cause problems, so give the modulator valve a try if it checks bad.
