Toyota Repair: 95 paseo gone wrong, coolant tank, jumper cables

Question
hi, i have a 95 paseo manual with a lot of miles.
one night it started to overheat (first time ever) and all of the lights came on, battery, engine, oil... turns out i was low on oil, but now the car wont even run without jumper cables hooked up to it (i assume the battery is dead?), and it overheats in about 5 miles, steam shoots out of the hose in the reserve coolant tank.
are these in any way related, or coincidence?
could a failed water pump cause the steam to shoot out or just a bad radiator? thanks!!

Answer
It won't run without a jumper battery because the alternator is not working, it's not charging the the battery, the engine should run even with the battery disconnected with the power supplied by the alternator.
There are lots of things that can cause overheating, from something simple like a stuck closed thermostat to a blown headgasket, the radiator could be the problem as well as the water pump, have it checked for a blown headgasket and the cooling system pressure tested for any leaks.
