Toyota Repair: 91 Toyota Previa 2.4GL idle problem., fuel comsuption, jumper wire

Question
Hi Ted
Have got a problem on my Previa, start up is fine, during warm up engine use to keep dying and losing power, replaced the water sensor for the ecu, problem still happening and doing with eng at normal temperature as well, in traffic constantly keeps cutting out, restarts no problem, strong smell of fuel when the windows are open, very poor fuel comsuption, drives fine, have been told that I can access my error codes by shorting out a couple of pins on the TE1 & E1 connectors! What do you think? It does say do it at your own risk! Have read through loads of your q&A and a lot of them seem to relate to my problem. Car is in excellent condition with a full service history up to 70K miles, and then I have done the filters, oil as per the book, it has now got 114K on it, car has not missed a beat until now. Have never changed the plugs or had the dizzy cap off. You say the cat converter is a common problem but not sure if I have one on this. Its a UK model. Any hep would be much appreciated.

Answer
Yes you can retreive the diagnostic trouble codes by connecting a jumper wire between te1 and e1 but if the check engine light is not on there are no trouble codes, is the check engine light on?
It kind of sounds like there maybe an engine misfire but if the check engine light is on there may be another problem so if the light is on get the trouble codes and then let me know what they are, if there are none start by replacing the spark plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor because it sounds like a power loss due to an engine misfire.
