Toyota Repair: Tercel water pump leakage, rubber hoses, silver pipe

Question
Hey Ted,

My coolant keep running out on my 95 Tercel. Recently I found out that the metal pipe that goes into the water pump (its at silver pipe attached to two rubber hoses)was loose and that seems to be the problem. I pushed it back in and it worked for a while but now it can't hold any coolant. At the end of that pipe is a black seal. I think thats may be the problem.

Any way I could fix that problem.

Thanks a bunch.

Alex

Answer
There is a rubber o-ring that seals the pipe, to replace it the pipe has to be removed from the block and pulled back far enough to get the new o-ring on, there are about three attaching bolts on the pipe, one is right above the starter and there are two more, one at the back of the cylinder head and one more on the front of the head.
Check the pipe very carefully because they can corrode to the point where a new seal won't help and the pipe has to be replaced.
