Toyota Repair: 1999 Toyota pre runner pick up, scantool, pre runner

The check engine light came on and the motor died. It started back up, but the light stayed on. What could be the problem.

The first step to diagnose any check engine light is to retreive the diagnostic trouble code in the computer, without it I can't help, I recommend that you have a shop connect either a code reader or scantool to the on board computer to see why the check light is on, if you like you can let me now what the code is and what they recommend to repair and I can offer a course of action to take that may save you some unesessary repairs and expense.
