Toyota Repair: 1987 Toyota Corolla LE, intake manifold gasket, toyota corolla

Question
Hi Ted,
I own a 1987 Toyota Corolla LE, carbureted 1.6L, 4 cyl engine. Milage:187,930.
If the car sits for 2 hours or more I must pour a little gas down the carb to get it started.
And lately when I first take off in it, it will jerk and act like it will die but will pick up again. It also does this when I'm going up a hill.
It also seems to lose power.
But after it picks up, it runs good, until I have to slow down or stop and go again.
I think I should mention the car has been sitting for 6 months.
It has a new fuel filter, air filter, alternator and I've had the oil changed. (it does not burn oil.)
And it does not seem to get the gas milage it should.
What do you think might be causing this problem?
I would appreciate any suggestions you may have, thank you.

Answer
Possibly an electrical misfire, could be spark plugs, wires or distributor cap and rotor or another possibility is an intake manifold gasket leak, make sure the spark plugs etc are good. It could also be caused by the old gas in the tank, in 6 months gasoline will deteriorate to the point where it may be causing this kind of problem.
