Toyota Repair: 99 4Runner Transmission, national chains, toyota dealer

Question
The transmission on my 1999 4 Runner with 53K miles on it just doesn't sound right when it shifts and it sort of feels like it is slipping s little at times.  I know that's not much to go on but I don't know what to ask for at the Toyota dealer.....transmission tune up, change the fluid, check and tighten the bands, or what?  I hate to go in there and just ask them to check the transmission but maybe that's what I should do.  What I want to avoid is a huge $$$$ bill for nothing but an appointment for another large $$$ transmission repair.  How about a regular transmission shop?  Are the national chains OK to go to for this type of thing?

Answer
The last thing I would do is to recommend going to an independent transmission shop even a national chain like AAMCO etc.
First of all at 53k miles it is very unusual to have this kind of problem unless the transmission was completely neglected and never had the fluid changed, it just doesn't sound right.
When diagnosing a transmission problem the first step is always to check the fluid level, let the engine warm up and check the dipstick, make sure it is at the full "hot" mark, if not add fluid as needed, if fluid has to be added there may be a leak so check for an external leak. This may solve the problem.
There are no adjustable bands.
I'd suggest going in to the toyota dealer and tell them what the concern is and have them diagnose it, don't ask them to do anything except to diagnose what your concern is and see what they say.
Once you have that information you can get back to me for further advice or you can take the dealer's advice.
