Toyota Repair: 1991 camry ,4 cyl, auto salvage yard, coil pickup

Question
hello: i'm asking this question for a friend who is down on his luck.  last week the car began to act up. battery and charge system presumed ok.  i will have my first look at the car tomorrow.  car trys to start but will not.  where does one begin to look-ignition or fuel system?  i'm guessing coil, pickup assembly, distributor/rotor,plugs/wires or fuel filter, fuel pump, injectors(is there a fuel additive and/or spray you would consider) hope it isn't computer             thank you very much     '91 camry 4cyl

Answer
Have you checked to see if there is spark at the spark plugs, have you removed the distributor cap to see if the rotor is turning, if not, the timing belt broke, if that's not the case and there is no spark check the coil in the distributor for cracks or arcing, if there is spark to the plugs there may be a fuel problem, the most common cause is that the fuel pump quit working, if there is fuel pressure the problem is electrical in nature, distributor failures are fairly common so if there is no firew to the plugs try picking up a used distributor from a local auto salvage yard and try it.
