My son owns a 1987 Toyota Camry, Model CMD. It is an automatic transmission. When driving, the car accelerates and shifts into second gear fine, but then loses power. It will eventually creep up to speed and shift into third, but very slowly. Going up hills it again loses power, and is a nightmare. We have changed the fuel filter, and adjusted the throttle cable. Any suggestions?

This may be a transmission problem, does the RPM(engine speed) increase when this happens and the car slows down? If that is the case the transmission is slipping and it has a major problem, if the engine speed slows along with the loss of power there is an engine related issue, please let me know which condition exists.

The RPM does not increase and my husband says that the he does not think the transmission is slipping.  The engine speed does slow with the loss of power and eventually increases to shift into third.

Answer
This could be a problem with the catalityc converter it may be clogging up and restricting exhaust flow, it can be tested by reading the O2 sensor voltages when the engine is running, another way is to disconnect the converter from the front exhaust pipe and drive it, if the power is normal the converter and muffler are clogged up, this method is noisy because the muffler is disconnected so I would advise doing this in a not so populated area.
