Toyota Repair: wont start, battery OK, toyota 4runner, distributor cap

Question
Toyota 4Runner 1998, 101K miles, Auto trans. Heard slight pop on starting, it tried to start but then quickly nothing. Battery tests good. Have not had any issues to date. Am 15 miles from town and would like to avoid towing. I can do some mechanical but probably not change starter type work.

Answer
It sounds like the timing belt may have broken but only if it is a V-6 engine, does the engine spin over but not start? If that is the case it is probably the timing belt, a quick way to check it is to remove the distributor cap and see if the rotor is turning when cranking the engine, if it does not the timing belt is the problem.
