Toyota Repair: lifter noise, and starter, valve shims, valve adjustment

Question
I have a 97 4 runner 3.4 v6 engine. First off I am now hearing a lifter noise. Do i need a new engine. 120000 miles. I can remember back when I had a 94 toyota truck, 2.4 engine I was told to have a valve adjustment done. I had it done. Do i need to do the same with the 3.4 v6? Next question. When the 4 runner sits for a few hours, like 8 hours after work or first thing in the morning. I start it, the starter will drag then stop, So I release the key then restart. It starts after the 2nd turn. I heard the copper contacts or brushes wear out. Should I replace the starter or have the local rebuild shop crack it open and replace the copper things? Thank You.

Answer
The V-6 engine uses valve shims for adjustment, even though they do not go out of adjustment as frequently as the older engines I would recommend having the adjustment checked.
The starter contacts can be replaced, they should be available at the toyota dealer, as far as I now it's the only thing that ever wears out, the only part that has to be disassembled is the solenoid, the contacts are in there.
