Toyota Repair: Electrical, broken wires, gear indicator

Question
1993 Camry  V-6 Auto transmission

Back-up lights dont't go on when trans put in reverse. Instrument panel gear indicator "R" lights up when brake is depressed. Check all fuses out to be OK. Reverse bulbs (1156) checked and replaced for the hell of it. AC works, all other lights work....What and where should I check? Gear shift selector reverse light switch? Is this easy to get to? From top or underside of vehicle?

Thank you....

Answer
The first thing to check is the wire harness on the left trunk hinge, this is a common problem.
I'm going to tell you how to repair this problem, if you do not feel like doing this yourself contact a toyota dealer and tell them to check this wire harness for broken or shorted wires.
Open the wire harness by removing all the insulation until the individual wires are exposed, the insulation has to be removed all the way into the trunk where it enters into the passenger compartment, check for any broken wires, test pull all the wires to see if any of them pull apart, the wires that are broken can be either soldered back together or reconnected with crimp type connectors, after the wire repair the wires are taped back up and the corrugated shield should be reinstalled.
