Toyota Repair: I have a 1992 Toyota 4-Runner,..., metal particles, red chips

Question
I have a 1992 Toyota 4-Runner, V 6, automatic transmission, w/ 114,000 mi. The problem I'm having w/ it is: Sometimes while I'm driving, and it feels like it's going to change into another gear, it will slow right down, make a funny growly noise, all the while the RPM's are speeding up, then all of a sudden it will return to normal and pickup speed. It doesn't do this all the time or everyday. We thought it was the transmission but I've taken it to the dealer a few times and other automotive places and they've checked it, found nothing wrong and have had me leave it w/them for the day so they could see if it performed that way while they drove it (of course it never does).  Nobody seems to know what the problem is. Can you help?

Answer
I can't be of much help either without actually experiencing the concern,it kind of sounds that it may be a transmission problem to me.
Here is what you can do, check the transmission fluid with the engine running in neutral, make sure it is at operating temp, make sure the level is up at the hot mark on the dipstick, check the fluid, does it look dark brown and does it smell burned,if so, have the transmission oil pan removed and check for any particles in the bottom of the pan, any metal particles or clutch material(dark red chips) and you can be sure that the transmission will need attention soon as possible.
