1991 Toyota Pickup 4x4, 4 cyl engine - husband replaced belts after alternator belt broke.  After belts were changed, check engine light came on, truck tried to start but seemed to not get fuel.  Friend checked and found blown fuse.  Truck started after about 5 minutes, still seemed to struggle, ran very poorly, rough idle, no power, bad gas smell and no power when trying to accelerate. Check engine light still on. Changed plugs, wires, distributor cap, etc., starts immediately, check engine light still on, still runs poorly, still bad gas smell, no power and used about a 1/4 tank just to get around the block.  What should we check now?  Truck did not have these problems before belts were changed.  We are trying to do repairs ourselves if possible, (trying to make down payment on new house and need every cent to go to that!) but we are novices, so any help you can give would be appreciated?  Thanks!!!

It would help a lot if you could check to see what the trouble code is that turns on the check engine light, you can do this by finding the diagnostic connector under the hood, it's on the right side, open the cover and make a jumper wire and connect it between the terminals TE1 and E1, turn the ignition key on, the check engine light will blink giving you the code, it will be a series of blinks, for instance, a code 25 will blink two times and then five times, there  may be more than one.
Check for any hoses or wire connectors that may have been disconnected, the engine is obviously getting way too much fuel, try to let me know what the trouble code is that is making the check engine light to come on.

Followup Question!
We got several codes...21,22,24,31,41. Husband and friend tried to replace oxygen sensor, but it did not do any good.  When alternator belt broke I was about 5 miles from home and drove it home overheating and running very hot.  Could I have wrecked the engine?  The next day, the truck started right up and my husband moved it about 100 ft so they could work on it, which is when the fuse must have blown, cause after they replaced the belts, it wouldn't start at all.  We still have same problems, lots of gas fumes, rough start and very rough running engine, with lots of choking and sputtering, no power when you accelerate.  By the way, truck has 187,000 miles.  Any other suggestions?  I am thinking it may be time to call in the professionals.   Thanks so much for your time!!!

Answer
I'm going to recommend two things to check before doing anything else, take the truck in and have the engine compression checked and have it checked for a possible blown headgasket, take it to a toyota dealer if possible, overheating the engine may have caused serious problems.
