Toyota Repair: Toyota RAV4 engine light / ignition problem?, toyota rav4, engine misfire

Question
Toyota RAV4 1998 - In Nov 2004 I first experienced a problem after driving for 40+ miles.  The RPM gauge drops quickly and briefly.  At the same time the engine light flashes - but does not stay on - and the vehicle briefly stalls.  This continues and becomes more frequent.  I stop the car and turn off the ignition briefly and the problem stops for another 15 miles.  After shutting off the vehicle for several hours, it runs just fine for 4 months.  Today (Mar 2005) the same thing happens, so I begin my search to identify and solve the problem.  I found at this web site a previous question/answer that described a nearly identical scenario.  (Subject:Toyota RAV4 engine light problem. Date:12/7/2004) In your answer, you say you need the code to be of any help.  I have a code reader and have checked for the code, but there is no saved code.  Also, I found a recall involving the 1998 RAV4 electrical system:ignition:anti-theft controller (Recall ID number 98E035000).  Can you help?  Please let me know if you need any more details.
Thanks,
Jack

Answer
The same goes for your question, I need a trouble code to steer me in the right direction, if your code reader is able to retreive past codes try that, without a DTC I have no idea where to start, the recall number you give me doesn't seem to be a toyota number, it may be a service bulletin number but I can't find a match.
The engine light flashing normally indicates a severe engine misfire which may damage the catalityc converter, I suggest that you drive the vehicle until the engine light stays on and/or you can retreive a trouble code and let me know what it is, at that point I can help.
