Toyota Repair: 4runner engine start/stall problem, toyota 4runner sr5, sr5 v6

Question
Dear Ted
I'm an owner of a '94 Toyota 4Runner SR5 V6 151000 Miles, Automatic transmission 4WD and I owne it for 2 years now with no problems so far. 4 weeks ago, after a patch of heavy rain, I suddenly needed to crank the engine a few (2-3) times before it'll start. When it also started to stall on me while driving, I brought it to the mechanic. He had the car for 2 days and was unable to reproduce the problem and told me to drive the car until it'll break down and he's got something to fix. I'm dealing now with the startup problem quite well. I realized that when turning the key to standby and the engine check light didn't come on, the engine wouldn't start. However if I leave it for a few seconds in standby (no cranking), turn it back off and then go back to standby, the engine light will come on and the engine will start perfectly. On the stalling problem, the
engine just shuts off while driving especially when driving slowely, however it also happened to me at 65mph on the freeway. It's not an everyday problem. I had a period of 5 days where I had no problems whatsoever. Also after the stall, when i stop and put the transmission back to park, I can restart the engine right away.
Well I'm writing an everyday logbook now to see wether I can see any pattern. I also had more problems when we had wet/humid weather, but I only keep the logbook for 2 weeks now.

Hope this makes sense to you and thanks for taking the time.

Mathias

Answer
I have read your question about three times and my best guess is that there may be a problem with the distributor, they can cause intermittant starting problems, try replacing it and see if it fixes the problem, I don't have any idea as to why the check engine light is acting this way, I have never seen this, the only thing I can offer on that is that there is some sort of wiring problem.
