My 1988 Toyota Exta Cab, long bed pickup truck ignition switch is stuck in the off position.  The button that releases the switch in normal use, on top of the column, is popped up abnormally high and will not push down. What are my next options?  In the past the ignition has momentarly stuck but with back and forth action by the key, would function properly and the popped up button was in a much lower position.  The truck has 90,000 miles on it.

The ignition lock cylinder needs to be replaced, in order to remove it the key has to be able to be put in the "ACC" position, remove the covers around the ignition switch and locate and depress the release pin, the cylinder will pull out of the housing and then you can replace it.

Thank you,  I have not, so far, been able to try this as I have not been able to turn the switch out of the "OFF" position.  Should I be using brute, key breaking force?  I will give this another try and if I am still unable to get the switch to turn to the "ACC" position, then what is next?  Doing the above, should I disconnect the battery?  Is it locksmith time or are there more options for me to try?

Answer
Sometimes wiggling the key around will eventually let you get it into the acc position, if not try having a new key made, the toyota parts department will need a key code to make a new key, they may be able to get the key code number for you by looking up the VIN#, if not you will have to remove the right side door panel and the door lock cylinder, the number is engraved on the outside of the door lock cylinder.
If all else fails the ignition lock cylinder will have to be drilled out, that job is best left to either a toyota dealer or a locksmith.
