Toyota Repair: 1996 Toyota Camry Headlight Switch Replacement, torx bolts, high beams

Question
1996 Toyota Camry V-6. The headlights work but the high beam will not work. Checked bulbs - good. When I pull back on the switch the bright lights will flash but when I push forward the brights will not come on. I think it might be the switch.I ask several parts stores if there is a high beam relay and they said no. I almost always do all my repairs myself. If you think it is the switch can I R&R the switch? If so what about the air bag? Does the air bag need to be disconnected?

Thank you for you advise,

Bob

Answer
You can exlude the relay as the problem because the high beams work when you pull on the lever for momentary high beam use, it uses the same relay as the normal high beams.
Check with the dealer to see if the headlight switch is available seperately or if the entire combination switch has to be replaced,in either case the steering wheel has to be removed, disconnect the battery and wait at least 90 seconds before doing anything.
The air bag has to be removed in order to get to the 19mm nut that holds the steering wheel on, to remove the airbag you will need a special TORX socket, I believe it is a #35, with an extension to reach into the recess that connects the air bag, the bolts are covered by plastic covers on either side of the steering wheel, remove them and you will see the torx bolts.
