Toyota Repair: Toyota Celica Engines, toyota celica, history of the car

Question
I, recently acquired a 1991 Toyota Celica Convert. 5 speed with a 2.2 engine in it.  The transmission is blown, so I will have to replace(rebuild) that. I was wondering if there is a replacement engine, and maybe transmission that can be relatively easily be dropped in to greatly increase performance.  I was planning to rebuild the engine anyway, because I don't know the history of the car, and it has 250,000 miles on it.  Ideally, a 6-cylinder with no modifications needed with its corresponding tranny would make my day.  What I really want is a monster in sheeps clothing.  Thank you for your time.  Jim

Answer
I'm not going to be able to help you, I'm not in the engine swapping business and have no information, in most states it is not legal to change engines etc. because of local, state and federal emission control laws. Unless the car had an optional v-6 engine originally(which it didn't) it would be extermely difficult to change over to a v-6, in my opinion.
