Toyota Repair: Thermostat Location 1989 Toyota Camry, 1989 toyota camry, upper radiator hose

I took off the upper radiator hose on manifold and could not find a thermostat.  The thermostat I got from the auo parts store (Federated # 32498) the wrong one or s it located on the lower hose.  Seems impossible to get to...have to remove alternator first.

This must be a V-6 because the 4 cyl engine thermostats are easy to get to, it's not necessary to remove the alternator but you will have to loosen it to remove the belt, then move it up and out of the way, there is a 12mm nut on the pipe that connects the lower hose to a metal pipe, remove it and pull the pipe out of the thermostat housing then remove the 3 12mm nuts that connect the thermostat housing to the water pump, there is not much room and this is kind of difficult to do. best of luck.
