Toyota Repair: Check Engine Lamp on 1991 Camry is ON, jumper wire, trouble code

Question
I have recently got the alternator changed. Before this repairt the check engine lamp was ON and then after the alternator change it went away. But then after 2-3 weeks, it came back ON. Now the diagnostic channel as been ON for 2-3 weeks. I want to find out what the problem is without paying like a $80 to a mechanic to read codes. Can I diagnose any other way? Is there any power up sequence I can look for?

Answer
Here is how you can see what the trouble code is:
Open the hood and find the DTC connector, it's a small rectangular box with a cover on it.
Open the cover.
Look inside the cover and locate terminals TE1+E1
Make a jumper wire and connect it between the two terminals
Turn the ignition key to the ON position
The check engine light will start flashing and give you the trouble code
Count the number of times the engine light flashes, it may take a little time to get this right
It will be a combination of two numbers
For instance the light may flash two times and then four times, this will be a code 14
There will be a little pause between each combination of codes and there may be more than one so pay attention, the lowest number will appear first, write them down.
Once you have retreived the codes let me know what you have and I can give you an answer.
