Toyota Repair: Gasoline odor, toyota corolla sr5, 1986 toyota corolla sr5

Question
My wife's car is a 1986 Toyota Corolla SR5 hatchback with 150,000 miles.  Lately I've noticed a strong gasoline odor in the engine compartment that appears a few minutes AFTER she returns home and turns off the engine.  The odor is NOT present while the engine is running.  It does this about 50% of the time.  There is no leak that I can see.  What would cause this odor?  I'm afraid to have her park in the garage as our water heater and furnace are located there.

Will look forward to your reply.  Thank you.

Jerry

Answer
Make sure that the gas cap is on, after that I can't really be of much help other than to tell you that even though you can't see a leak there is a leak, otherwise you would not smell the odor, there are many places that can have a fuel leak so I highly recommend taking the car to a toyota dealer and have them check.
