Toyota Repair: 1997 4Runner ignition switch, lock cylinder, new keys

Question
I am having ignition switch prblems on a 1997 4Runner. Sometimes after putting the key into the switch, the switch will not not turn to the start position, like it is locked up. And recently when the key goes into the start position, it acts as if it is not making contact to the starter. The keys appear to be slightly worn but I'm not sure if the keys are the problem or if it is the ignition switch.

What is the cost of replacing the ignition switch? Is the something I can do or is it a job for the dealer?

Thanks for any help.

Answer
Try having a new key made first, take the VIN# to the toyota parts department they can make a key from this number, if it still doesn't work with the new key the ignition lock cylinder needs to be replaced, it comes with new keys, unfortunately the new keys will not work in any of the doors so if you don't mind using the new keys in the ignition and your old key in the door locks you can just replace the ignition lock cylinder, if you want one key to work in the ign and all the other doors the new lock will have to be disassembled and rekeyed to the old key, the dealer should be able to do this or a locksmith, call your toyota dealer for a price on the part and the cost of installation, it will be about $80 cheaper if you do not have the new lock rekeyed.
If you decide to buy the lock cylinder and installing it yourself let me know and I will tell you how to do it.
