Question -
I own a Toyota Corolla 1600 GL, 1991 model. The problem is that when the car is stopped (e.g., at a stop sign), the engine's idling sometimes becomes rough and it cuts out. Starting again is no problem, and neither do I observe any problems while driving - only when I stop the car.
I will apprectiate your opinion on this. I have taken the car to more than one garage, but they could not solve the problem - probably because it occurs intermittently.
Answer -
You said you took the car to more than one garage with no success, I need to know if they replaced any parts or what repairs were made, if any, this will help me in diagnosing the problem you are having. In other words, I need a little bit of repair history.

More info-
thank you for responding to my request. I am afraid I cannot be too helpful, though. I was simply been informed that they "checked everything" that may have caused the problem, and did not find anything amiss. On two of these ocasions, the car was serviced too at the time.

Answer
Thanks for the additional input, at this time I will have to take an educated guess as to what the problem may be, try replacing the distributor cap, rotor and the spark plugs and the plug wires and see if there is an improvement. Before you do that, check the air intake hose that connects the air cleaner to the throttle body for any cracks, or leaks at the connecting clamps, any air leaks there will also cause a stalling problem.
