Toyota Repair: Carreers as Techs, todays cars, toyota repair

Question
My son is considering entering programs with Toyota t-tens or GM next fall.

I personally would rather have him enter the Toyota program, however he is unsure.  We are not sure of the salarys or benefits of either, and would like to get as much input as possible before he decides.

Feel free to forward this to anyone who you think also might have good advice on either program.

Thanks, Ted

Answer
I don't know anything about GM's program so I can't comment on that objectively, I do know that the t-ten program is very good from what I'm hearing from students that enter the field into toyota repair at a dealer level.
As your son probably knows todays cars are heavily computer controlled, not just the engine management but just about everything else from sunroofs to GPS systems and everything inbetween, so a technician not only has to know the mechanical aspects but also be part electronic tech and it's going more and more into that direction, the technology is hard to keep up with and that's why a technician has to keep being informed and up to date.
I have been with toyota for over 25 years and the changes I have seen in the last ten years are mind boggling, the last thing I want to say is that although GM is the largest car maker in the world, Toyota is a close second and is catching up and may be number one in a few years, it is already selling the most cars in the US.
