Toyota Repair: Valve adjusment tools, toyota camry, valve adjustment

Question
Hi Ted:
Where can I get the lifter compressor tool (pliers type is show in my Haynes manual)  and assorted shims for 4 cyl 99 Toyota Camry valve adjustment?
Any other hints for this job.  Car has 105k miles.  Tx.

Answer
I'm pretty sure you can order the tool from a Toyota dealer, although toyota doesn't make the tool, it is made by a company called OTC, you may want to check with some local autoparts stores or warehouses they may have something that will work, as far as I know the shims are only available from toyota.
What I normally do is to check all the valves and mark each one that is within the limit and mark the ones that are too tight or loose with a mark on the edge of the cylinder head and write down the measurement then I remove the shims of the tight or loose valve and calculate how much thickness to add or remove and then get the needed shims from the parts department, I suggest before investing in the tool that you simply check the clearance with feeler gauges, you may find that none of them are out of specs which is the case 90% of the time.
