Toyota Repair: Key wont turn on switch, 1991 toyota camry, toyota camry

Question
My mother has a 1991 Toyota Camry "it had a tendency for the key to not turn on the switch. It was no bother for years. In fact, since daddy passed away it has acted up several times.A car 13 yrs old it gets to the point when you can't find new parts for it. It makes me cry to even think of a new car. I have  I have 54,074 miles on it and everybody who ever works on it wants to buy it." The statements in quotation marks is what my mother has told me about it, and she doesn't want to get rid of it because it was a Valentine's Day gift from my dad who passed away 04/2004. Any suggestions as what she should do.Thanks

Answer
This is a common problem, the ignition key cylinder just wears out after a while, here is my recommendation to you, take the car to your toyota dealer and tell them about the problem, what we normally do is replace the lock cylinder, the new cylinder will come with a new key but this key will not work in the locks of the rest of the car so I suggest that you have the original key recoded to the new cylinder so it will work in all the doors and the trunk.
There is no problem getting this part from the dealer.
