Toyota Repair: 92 toyota tranny problem/idle problem, rev limit, air leak

Question
92 tercel tranny shifting problems

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hey everyone..I have a 92 tercel with a 3 speed auto. When i floor it(merging on highway ..big hill,,,etc) the tranny seems to shift late ...seems the engine is way over its rev limit(no tach) and also shifts rather slow too....what do you think my fluid looks and smells good..Shifts fine when running around town (does engage hard into drive when cold)...I was wondering if there was an adjustment on the tranny for shifting points

Also it has a rough idle when in park and when im stopped at a light in drive....gets worse with air on....runs great at accereration and on the road no misses...I treid cleaning the throttle body but im not sure how to get " all the way in to clean" I just take of the main air hose open up the butterfly and scrub with a toothbrush.

thanks for your help in advance.

Answer
The shift points are controlled by throttle pressure and the governor valve, the cable has a small metal piece on it, it should be about 1mm from the end of the cable housing, adjust as needed. There may be an engine misfire, make sure the engine is running on all cylinders, if not have it checked to find out why, could be a bad spark plug or plug wires or an intake air leak, the most common problem for rough idle.
