Toyota Repair: Toyota 4Runner Headlight Malfunction, toyota 4runner, spiral cable

Question -
I have a 1998 Toyota 4Runner (auto).  When driving with the headlights on, pulling down on the turn signal lever will (frequently, but not always) turn the lights off for 1-2 seconds.  No past work on the steering wheel, or electrical work.  Any idea why?  Thanks a lot.  Scott

Answer -
I've never had this problem before but my best guess would be that there is a malfunction in the turnsignal/headlight combo switch, it probably needs to be replaced.

Followup To Question -
Thank you for the response.  I am by no means a mechanic, but I can usually dis-assemble and re-assemble things.  However, if the switch is in the steering column I'm not sure I want to tackle that as I have never worked on one before.  So in your opinion, is this something that should be left to a Dealer and if so, any idea of the cost to fix it?  Thanks again for your reply.  Scott

Answer
I would recommend having the dealer do this, the steering wheel has to be removed and then there is the airbag spiral cable assembly that has to come off, if not properly removed and reinstalled it can be damaged and cause the airbag light to come on and the spiral cable will have to be replaced.
I think the part is about $200 or less and the labor araound $160.
