Toyota Repair: A/C system, metal particles, dye test

Question
1992, Paseo, original 55,000 miles on it, has had few repairs since I bought it fours years ago

The A/C was not cooling even after adding freon so a "dye test" showed the A/C compressor and clutch and the A/C evaporator and expansion valve need to be replaced.  The cost is $1800.00.  Is this a common problem with older models?  Is this price fair?

Answer
Not common but it does happen, the reason that all those parts need to be replaced is that when the compressor fails it sends metal particles through the system which clog the expansion valve, receiver drier etc., if the compressor is the cause of the problem the repair seems reasonable, the price seems a little high, is this a toyota dealer or an independent shop, I would shop around and get some more quotes for the repair from a dealer or even other shops.
